Design Workshop: The Art of Simple Stitching

March 2019

Presented by Anna Walker, Windgate Foundation assistant curator; and Rebecca Braziel, teaching artist

We rolled up our sleeves for an afternoon of simple stitching, inspired by Lutisha Pettway’s remarkable denim “Bars” Quilt in the exhibition Mending: Craft and Community—Selections from the Museum’s Collection.

The afternoon began with a look at what “mending” and “community” mean in the world of contemporary craft, and how the artists in the exhibition have interpreted these concepts. In the hands-on activity that followed, I demonstrated how to use simple stitches to create beautiful, textural art out of recycled denim.
